Information about Toledo

Toledo is known as “city of the three cultures”, referring to Christian, Arabic and Jewish culture, which lived together during centuries. The walls surrounding the city already existed in the roman period, but the Arabs established the modern layout, characterized by the numerous access gates and bridges, like the Alcantara’s one. This fusion of traditions can be perceived mostly in the architecture, where an interchange of influences brings to hybrids endowed with own personality. These characteristics make the historical center of Toledo a real open-air museum, declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most beautiful and lively part of Toledo is situated around Zocodover square. Nearby there is the Alcazar fortress, built in the highest part of the city. Passing through “Calle del Comercio”, you can arrive to the city’s main square, that hosts the Cathedral, considered a pick of Spanish gothic. Moreover, for those who love art, Toledo can be identified with the famous painter El Greco, who spent there the last 37 years of his life, giving fame to the city. There are still some works that you can visit in the “Casa-Museo”(Museum-House), a reconstruction of the painter’s house.
