Information about Leon
The old capital of the Kingdom of Leon, it’s situated in the north-west of Spain. Important way-station on the “Camino de Santiago”, León preserve an interesting romanesque, gothic and renaissance connected with its most glorious period during the middle-age. The Plaza Mayor square configure the historical center, the streets in the area around are full of bars and restaurants, where is possible to taste the best of regional cuisine, for this reason “el Húmedo” is the nickname given to the neighborhood. The years transformed León into the medieval Kingdom’s capital. In León the cultural and leisure offer can be beaten only by the quality and variety of its gastronomy.
León is a city that attracts many tourists thanks to the monuments and historical building variety. Among them stand out the Cathedral, an impressive temple in gothic style with a complex decoration dated from the XIII century. Other building with a special importance is the Basilica of San Isidoro, incredible work of art that represents romanesque architecture, paint and sculpture. Its thick walls preserved what is famous as the Sistine Chapel of the “Spanish Romanesque”. It is about “frescos” of the XII century in an exceptional state of preservation, which decorates the crypt of the Royal Pantheon.
