Information about Ourense

Ourense, located in the Miño River Valley, is the capital of the only province of Galicia that’s not situated on the coast. Its origin can be traced to the Romans, and it’s testified by the roman bridge and by the Burgas, hot springs and rest places really appreciated by this ancient population. Having a walk in the old town, you can discover the rich artistic heritage of Ourense. The Plaza Mayor square’s portico was the center of the city social and commercial life, markets, celebrations and any type of cultural or recreational event was celebrated here. In this beautiful area, made of little streets and squares and embellished by fountains and typical Cruceiros (Calvary sculptures), a lot of historical monuments can be found.

The best preserved monument of roman age is the Ponte Vella (old bridge), but only a few stone blocks belong to the original bridge. In the old town the clock tower rises just alongside of the San Martin’s Cathedral, which was built between the XII and the XIII century and in some details can be compared to Santiago de Compostela’s Cathedral. Before leave the city is compulsory to stop to the Burgas, hot springs that made Ourense famous. The oldest spring is the upper one and dates back to the XVII century instead, the lower was built in neoclassical style.
