Information about Huelva

Huelva is located in the Gulf of Cadiz, at the mouth and confluence of the Tinto and Odiel rivers. It’s the westerner city of Andalucía with an ancient mining tradition and it was witness of America’s discovery. In fact, the city is famous for giving hospitality to Christopher Columbus before his departure to the new world. The connection between city and history is still visible, proved by a lot of monuments connected to the event and also with the Columbian city party celebrated every year. These celebrations have a typical Andalusian taste with a little bit of Latin America flavor. Huelva is a meeting place, a city of interchange and fusion between Europe and America, because of this it’s called Puerta del Atlántico (Atlantic door). It’s characterized by houses decorated with tiles, the typical painted ceramic tiles, and by a venerable religious heritage. The city also has a natural and archeological wealth apart has some of the best beaches in the Andalusian coast.

The Merced Cathedral is one of the most important religious buildings in Huelva, it was built as church for the homonym convent that nowadays is a university center. In the oldest part of the city there’s the San Pedro’s Church, built in the XVI century in gothic-mudejar style upon the ruins of an old mosque, its tower is a typical image of Huelva’s landscape. To appreciate a panoramic view of the city and the rivers, you have to walk up to the Conquero’s viewpoint, which is on the way to go to the “Nuestra Señora de la Cinta” Sanctuary.
