The municipal building, in gothic style, overlooks the beautiful Grand'Place, defined by Jean Cocteau as “the most beautiful theatre in the world”. This square is the heart of the old city, there are so many and decorated historical buildings that surround it, that it’s impossible to find another place like this in Brussels. Near the Grand'Place, there is the small sculpture named Manneken Pis, it is the mascot of the city and represents its playful spirit. Another symbol is the Atomium, an enormous molecular model built for the 1958 world’s fair, reopened to the public in 2006.
